The Foundation of Community Hospice & Palliative Care has broken ground on the $10 million Dorion Family Pediatric Center in Jacksonville, which will expand access to care and provide a tailored environment for children living with complex illnesses.

The center is named in honor of the Dorion family, led by Dorothy “Dottie” Dorion and her late husband, George Dorion, longtime Community Hospice supporters. The foundation has raised $6.6 million of the center’s cost, including a “transformative” gift from the Dorion family, according to officials.

“Their visionary leadership played a pivotal role in establishing the organization and their enduring generosity has now come full circle,” the foundation said.

The center is to be completed in spring 2026.

Among other things, the center will have caregiver support programs, psychosocial care, spiritual care, educational opportunities and regularly scheduled events to give families respite from caregiving. Also, the center will promote socialization among children with similar conditions, provide therapeutic recreation activities and serve as a sanctuary for families, according to the release.
